Miles Beamguard, PhD and Mr. Hugo Hodge, Chief Executive Officer of the Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority (VI WAPA), presented at the CWWA 20th Annual Conference “The Future of Water and Waste Management in The Region.”
Mr. Hodge and Dr. Beamguard compared the financial considerations and process hurdles of transitioning a municipal water supply from thermal desalination to reverse osmosis. The study is based on theoretical and actual operational data; supported by comparisons between the existing VI WAPA thermal units and data from the 1.5 MGD reverse osmosis water supply contracted to Seven Seas Water in 2009. This successful project has resulted in a contract to provide over 7 MGD of potable water to the Territory by transitioning from thermal to reverse osmosis. VI WAPA expects to save nearly 50% compared to their current water production costs.
